The Tsiribihina River is located in Madagascar and borders the town of Belo, where a ferry is still the only way to cross today.
A student of Fernand Cormon's studio, Robert Fernier was awarded the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1932. From 1950 he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants. He was the author of Gustave Courbet's catalogue raisonné and president of the Association of Friends of Gustave Courbet.
He was best known for his landscapes of the Jura, Tahiti and Tananarive, the capital of Madagascar where he lived, as well as his portraits of the inhabitants of these islands and regions.
