This pair of charming landscapes, executed with elegant rocaille taste and complete with attractive decorative frames, are conceived with the scenographic sensitivity of the most classic Venetian landscape tradition of the early 18th century.

The works, of good pictorial quality, show clear references to the pictorial style of Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676 - Venice 1730), one of the most important protagonists of Venetian landscape painting of this period.

The perspective, characterised by a succession of hills and rocky slopes, with mountains visible in the background in refined pale blue tones, is also modulated by the harmonious sequence of light and shadow, creating a remarkable effect of depth. Among the innovations introduced by Ricci in landscape painting is his experimentation with light and its atmospheric possibilities.

The works under consideration share many details with many others by the master, such as the mountain ranges that dissolve into the background, the trees placed in the foreground to the side, as well as the small figures that animate the scene, in addition to the compositional cut of the view that expands in depth in a modulated succession of perspective planes.

After a stay in England and Holland, where he gained first-hand knowledge of Northern painting, particularly the works of Pieter Mulier and Jacob de Heusch, Ricci moved towards new experimentation in the rendering of atmospheric luminosity. His new landscape style blended with the style in vogue in Venetian art, creating an unprecedented interpretation of landscape painting that was destined to enjoy extraordinary success and naturally inspired many painters close to him.

Our two works, created by an artist who must certainly have seen and studied his compositions, are an excellent example of this, a fascinating combination of Venetian, Roman and Flemish painting.
