This decorative work on wood from the French school of the late 19th century presents an interesting composition of a haystack under a dynamic sky, with a hay cart and peasants in the background, capturing the essence of rural life in late 19th century Puy-de-Dôme.


Although our painting is unsigned, it is documented on the back as being by G. Bonfils and located in Billom, Puy-de-Dôme.

Biography:

Gaston Bonfils, born in 1855 in Menton and deceased in 1946, was a French painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he refined his art under the guidance of renowned masters.

Specializing in genre painting, Bonfils captivated his audience with scenes of everyday life, rich in detail and imbued with romanticism. His works, including portraits, historical scenes, and allegorical compositions, are recognized for their ability to express emotion and the personality of the subjects. His skillful use of light and color also marked his distinctive style.

Among his notable works are paintings such as "The Gallant in the Tavern" and "The Cardinal, Lover of Painting," which illustrate his talent for depicting complex narratives with precision. Bonfils also explored mythological and literary themes, adding an intellectual dimension to his work.

Throughout his career, Gaston Bonfils regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon, where his works were well received by critics and the public. He also participated in various international exhibitions, thereby contributing to the spread of his art beyond French borders.
