Louis Bissinger (1899-1978) :
Louis Bissinger was born in Lyon on April 24, 1899. He studied cello at the Lyon Conservatory of Music, where he enrolled in 1914, before turning to painting. He painted landscapes and still lifes in the Lyon region. The painter regularly used the pseudonym “Régis Bérard” to sign his paintings. In 1943, he was arrested as a member of the Resistance and deported to the Buchenwald camp, where he remained until May 1945. There he produced numerous watercolor drawings, mainly showing views of the camp. On his return, he exhibited his works on the Buchenwald camp. After the war, he continued his artistic career, settling in Morestel, in Isère. In 1955, he donated a dozen watercolors on paper to the Army Museum, landscapes showing views of the Buchenwald camp. “I painted in watercolors where I spent 18 months as a Patriotic Resistance fighter: I painted from life at the risk of my life despite repeated warnings from my comrades,” " he wrote to the director of the Army Museum at the time of the donation in 1955. He was awarded the Military Medal by decree on December 29, 1959.
