Self-portrait of the artist as a history painter. Copy around 1800 in almost exact dimensions of the self-portrait executed in 1711 at the request of the Parisian art dealer Louis d'Assenay, who hung it in his home on the rue des Fontaines as a pendant to a painted self-portrait by Hyacinthe Rigaud. Both self-portraits passed into the collection of Jean de Julienne before being bequeathed in 1766 to the Académie Royale, then seized during the Revolution. They were exhibited at the Special Museum of the French School in Versailles, then at the Louvre before returning permanently to the Palace of Versailles.
