Important medal in 18k gold (750°/°°) representing the Virgin in profile surrounded by rose-cut diamonds and plique-à-jour enamel. The medal is enhanced with a diamond surround and the bail is also set with rose-cut diamonds. Signed F. VERNON. French work from the Art Nouveau period circa 1900. Presence of the eagle's head hallmark for 18-carat gold. Frédéric Charles Victor de Vernon (1858 - 1912) was a French sculptor and engraver of medals. An engraving prize bears his name. He created remarkable medals often using complex enameling techniques and excellent quality chasing. His rare and sought-after medals are part of major jewelry collections such as that of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
