Madonna and Child in a Landscape, bronze plaquette in high relief.
Venice, second half of the 16th century.
Dimensions: 8.9 x 11.3 cm
This plaquette, known from rare examples, is unanimously attributed to the Venetian school: this attribution is based on the location of the four examples preserved elsewhere (Correr Museum in Venice, museums of Padua (see last photo), Brescia and Belluno) and especially on the typically Venetian composition of a Virgin and Child shifted to the side in front of a landscape that we imagine to be twilight (an innovation initially due to Titian).
To report: four holes that were to allow the plaquette to be fixed to a support. Slight remains of gilding in some places. Wear on the most protruding parts.
