Object description :

"18th Century Giltwood War Attributes"
Louis XVI period carved and gilded wood doorknob depicting a collection of warlike attributes

In the center, a large shield adorned with radiant feathers is surrounded by bundles of pikes, arrows, an axe, a sword, and foliage. Two billowing flags frame the composition, creating a sense of movement. The whole is crowned with a stylized ribbon bow, tied with a rosette from which two branches emerge, winding along the sides, a typical motif of the Louis XVI period.

This type of decorative composition, combining warrior and hunting symbols, was very popular during the reign of Louis XVI. The carving is fine, well-balanced, and features its original gilding.

Gilded wood doorknobs were notably designed to be of significant size to attract attention and enhance the space. They decorated the doorways of salons, armories, and music rooms, adding a touch of elegance and eloquence to prestigious interiors. These decorations are also found in castles and aristocratic buildings.

Beautiful, finely chiseled and sculpted work from the 18th century, in its original gilding.
