Polychrome marble bust of Seneca, Roman Stoic philosopher

The bust is a very fine 17th-century work, crafted from various polychrome marbles. The meticulous workmanship contrasts with the pure white of the head.

The head, however, is almost certainly from the 19th century and is believed to represent Seneca, a Stoic statesman, philosopher, and playwright of Imperial Rome, often called "Seneca the Philosopher" or "Seneca the Tragedian." He is recognizable by his striking and almost eloquent face, of exceptional refinement; an expressive modeling: the high forehead, the carefully rendered beard with its subtle individual waves, and the inward gaze lend the work a thoughtful nobility. The features are both austere and full of humanity, evoking the figure of the Roman sage, the tumult of power, and destiny. His hair, always depicted in the same way, which is found in ancient sculptures and drawn portraits, is symbolic of this character and of great ancient personalities.

To contrast with the face, carved from white Carrara marble, he is dressed in a garment crafted from various colored marbles: black Portoro, giallo antico, red breccia, and antique green blend together in a sumptuous interplay of contrasts.

This refined choice of materials testifies to the Baroque taste for rich textures and the sculptor's virtuoso craftsmanship.

A work of exceptional quality, rare for the richness of its marbles and the depth of its expression. Seneca, the great philosopher of the 3rd century BC, advisor to Nero, and martyr of philosophy, embodies the ideal of reason triumphing over passion;

an elegant presence, both intellectual and decorative.

This marble bust rests on a gray marble base.

It is presented on a two-tone conical marble column with stepped feet, which is sold separately.
