Veneto-Cretan icon, 15th century
Oil and gold on wood panel
Dimensions: 40 x 28 cm
Origin: Crete or Venice, circa 1450–1480
A sublime representation of Our Lady of Good Counsel, an image of intimate and meditative piety, whose devotion took off in particular from the second half of the 15th century, particularly after the events of Genazzano (Italy, 1467).
This work perfectly embodies the Veneto-Cretan tradition: a fusion of Byzantine iconography and the aesthetic contributions of the Italian Renaissance.
The Virgin tenderly inclines her head towards the Child Jesus, who embraces her neck in a gesture that is both tender and profoundly human. The intersecting gazes and the gentle curves of the faces underscore the psychological delicacy of the scene. Gold leaf background, etched with a drypoint to create radiant halos of great finesse.
Oil painting on wood, recently restored with respect for the original paint layer.
Vibrant color palette:
Carmine red for the Marian robe,
Deep blue for the mantle (maphorion),
Gilding enhanced on the edge of the garment and the halos.
Stylized drapes, with architectural folds, evoke Byzantine rigor tempered by a more Western modeling. This image belongs to the repertoire of so-called icons of tenderness (Eleousa), enriched here by the typology specific to Our Lady of Good Counsel.
15th-century Cretan workshops, then under Venetian domination, produced large numbers of works intended for export to the Latin West. This panel fits perfectly into this production, associated with workshops in Candia (Heraklion). ???? Attributable to a Veneto-Cretan workshop, influenced by the tradition of Nikolaos Tzafouris or his followers.
Rare and precious iconic typology.
Perfect condition after recent restoration.
