"Painting, Two Disciples Recognize The Resurrected Jesus Christ (emmaus Pilgrimage), Late 17th Century"
The original painting " Jesus and the disciples at Emmaus" by Peter Candid (1548-1628) is now lost. It is known through an engraving by Johann Sadeler. The scene shows Jesus blessing the bread at the moment when the two disciples recognize him. The composition is symmetrical , with a strong focus on the central figure of Christ, that is enlighted by a simple candle.
our unknown artist, follower of Flemish painters uses the contrast of obscurity and light like the " caravagists".
Probably Germany, mid XVIIth century.
