"19th Century Bronze Sculpture, Judith & Holofernes, Griotte Marble Base, Napoleon III, Mythology"
Antique patinated bronze sculpture depicting Judith, the famous biblical heroine, just after her act of bravery: the beheading of the Assyrian general Holofernes. This finely executed work embodies the powerful contrast between feminine grace and the violence of the sacrifice necessary to save her people. Judith is depicted standing, draped in an elegant, loosely pleated garment, with a serene and noble posture, looking away from the dramatic scene at her feet. At the base of the sculpture, the head of Holofernes is clearly visible, treated with great attention to detail: wavy hair, a full beard, an expression frozen in the stupor of death. The composition rests on a circular base of red veined marble. 21cm high. Very good condition.
