Pair of half-moon commodes, Italian manufacture, Lombardy, late 18th century.
Walnut, rosewood, maple, and fruitwood, marble top.
94 x 127 x 60 cm
This pair of commodes, crafted from fine woods, is a refined example of late 18th-century Lombard craftsmanship. The distinctive rounded shape gives the piece volume, while the ochre marble top, with its gray and scarlet veining, contrasts with the warm tones of the walnut. At the center, the delicate inlays depict cups filled with acanthus leaves and geometric motifs; the two side drawers feature decorative strings of plant motifs, culminating in hook-beaked birds, perhaps eagles. The legs are pyramidal in shape.
