Caricature on the theme of the Railway, part of a series produced by René De Pauw during the Great War, evoking, in a satirical, sometimes ferocious way, the difficult living conditions of the people of Brussels occupied by the Germans, marked by the widespread shortage of basic products and the deterioration of their quality of life.
René De Pauw, 1887-1946, Belgian painter, draftsman, caricaturist, engraver and illustrator. He was a student of Florimond Van Acker at the Academy of Bruges in 1912-1913. He settled in Brussels after the First World War. Stayed in Heist-aan-Zee from 1938 to 1943 then in Uccle. He initially painted floral compositions, portraits, nudes, and landscapes, then from 1930 he was inspired by the life of fishermen whom he painted in their family environment. His works are dark in color with monumental figures reminiscent of Permeke. He was also the author of wall decorations, notably for the hall of Bruges station. He was a book illustrator and a renowned caricaturist. Works at the Antwerp Museum and the Groeningemuseum in Bruges. Artist listed in the Bénézit, Arto, and Piron. Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc.
