"Virgin Slaying The Serpent 18th Century"
Virgin slaying the serpent 18th century. Polychrome oak statue which was certainly intended for processions? (presence of a perforation allowing it to be fixed on a pole?) "The Virgin slaying the serpent is a great classic of Catholic iconography of the Immaculate Conception. This Virgin appears standing, arms wide open. She is placed on a half terrestrial globe around which a serpent is coiled. She firmly crushes it with her bare foot." In our case the terrestrial globe is in green polychromy and the serpent indeed goes all the way around this globe, its tail goes up towards the left hand of the virgin. The latter has one arm spread out. Statue in good condition apart from some lack of polychromy. Height 38 cm
