Ferdinand Fargeot "moorish Villas Near Algiers" 1923
Artist: Ferdinand Fargeot (1880 - 1957)
This beautiful evocation of the Algiers region was painted by Ferdinand Fargeot during his stay at the Villa Abd El Tif, Algiers, in 1923. The Villa Abd El Tif was the oriental equivalent of the Villa Medici, welcoming young French artists.
With a few broad and generous strokes of paint, in a beautiful palette, the painter brings out a seaside landscape, dominated by Moorish villas, with colorfully dressed figures in the foreground.
Touches of white punctuate the composition, white Algiers is not far away.
On the back of the painting are some interesting inscriptions:
An old exhibition label stuck on a framing label with the date "1923" and we can see the traces of the inscription "Moorish Villas" A later written mention "Ferdinand Fargeot (1880 - 1957) Moorish Villas near Algiers 1923"
Finally a framer's stamp in Montparnasse in red.
Ferdinand Fargeot was born in Lyon, studied Decorative Arts. In 1922 he exhibited at the Galerie Georges Petit, in 1923 he moved to the Villa Abd El Tif in Algiers where he immersed himself in Orientalism. Many museums preserve some of his works: Museum of Fine Arts of Nantes, Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon, Grenoble and the Luxembourg Museum.
