"Louis Kley (1833 - 1911) Bronze "ariadne On The Panther""
Bronze sculpture signed by Louis Kley (1833-1911) listed model entitled "Ariadne on the Panther" Interesting mythological subject taken up by the sculptor towards the end of the 19th century after an original by the German Johann Heinrich von Dannecker (1758-1841) at a time when exotic scenes and subjects were very fashionable, sought after on the art market. Signature of the artist on the terrace and annotated "Dannecker" on the border. Good condition, beautiful patina, dimensions: 28 cm high X 23 cm long X 10 cm deep. Ariadne is sitting naked as an amazon on a Panther of Dionysius, the young woman is wearing a crown with vine branches symbolizing her union with Dionysus. The panther, a symbol of power and ferocity, combines with the delicacy of the female figure to create a dynamic scene exuding strength and serenity. In Greek mythology, Ariadne is distinguished by her intelligence and beauty; her story is marked by love and divinization, captivating poets, painters, and sculptors. This sculpture evokes the perfect example of the Antique style, where classical beauty merges with the pursuit of formal perfection.
Louis Kley was born on March 17, 1833, in Sens. He was an apprentice in jewelry before turning to sculpture in 1850, studying under Justin-Marie Lequien. He exhibited between 1853 and 1897 and created a large number of statues, statuettes, busts, medallions, groups, and bas-reliefs. He received the silver medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris.
