Georgian miniature mourning ring in low-grade gold. Oval in shape, this ring features a polychrome miniature in its center, protected by glass. The miniature depicts a young woman leaning on a column, in mourning, staring at the ground. She wears a white dress with a draped effect, in the antique style. The shoulders of the ring are decorated with striations and stylized flowers. The underside is smooth and concave to fit the finger perfectly. Sentimental jewelry, circa 1780, probably English.

In the 18th century, mourning rings, also called "memory rings," became intimate jewelry. Shaped like a navette, oval, or hexagonal, they were often adorned with miniatures painted on ivory, protected by domed glass: an idealized portrait of the deceased, an allegorical figure, or a funeral scene. More than a black accessory, it was a memorial jewel, discreet yet deeply expressive.
