"M. Papillon (edith Papillon? 1904-1982) Valley Of The Painters In Crozant. Creuse, Hareux, Detroy"
Very beautiful oil on cardboard representing the Creuse valley towards Crozant signed lower right M.Papillon, marked on the back "N°157 The valley of the painters in Crozant. Size of the painting alone 24x33cm and 30.5x40 cm including frame. It is therefore a beautiful post-impressionist composition around 1930/1950 representing the Creuse valley, made largely with a knife in a rich paste and a very subtle palette in pastel tones, signed M.Papillon... So, could it be Edith Papillon who was called Mme Meslier, or M for Meslier??? Or perhaps a work by her father who was also a painter??? I cannot say for sure, having never had a work by Edith Papillon, an artist referenced in the Crozant school; she was even born in Crozant itself. She will spend time at the École des Arts Déco in Paris, then exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1929 and 1930, where she exhibited landscapes of Creuse. She had a particular fondness for pastels. Her father was a close friend of the painter Ernest Hareux. This painting is in very good condition and comes in a gilded frame.
