"The Bottle Washer By Jules Robichon (1839-1910)"
Painting depicting a bottle washer in the Touraine region. The typical Touraine house in the background is easily recognizable. While this rare subject is quite rare in painting, it was painted a few times by Jules Robichon, who loved to convey the daily gestures of wine lovers. Jules Paul Victor Robichon (1839-1910). A 19th-century French painter, born in Paris in 1839, he was also a draftsman and engraver. His subjects included still lifes, landscapes, and interior scenes. He exhibited at the Salons des Artistes Français and became a member. Jules Robichon lived and painted in Pau, then Tours and Le Vésinet. In 1879, the Hôtel Drouot dedicated an 8-page catalog to him listing 108 paintings. Around 1880, the Robichon family moved to 35 rue de la Mairie (which became rue Jean-Laurent in 1889) and seems to have made a living from Jules's art. It was there that they cohabited for a time with the De Vlaminck family. Jules Robichon would have the posthumous claim to fame of having been one of Maurice De Vlaminck's "masters", even if the latter did not recognize any of them and if, according to Maurice Genevoix, Vlaminck would have been more influenced by a saddler from Vésinet "who painted portraits on pieces of glass with dyes and necklace varnishes." Although he tried to copy Robichon's works, he found them "too beautiful" to be inspired by them. Jules Robichon's paintings are sold in France and around the world.
