Oil on canvas by Félix Guyot-Guillain, Representing the Marabout of Monastir on the shores of the Mediterranean. It is signed and dated 1942 lower right. Bears on the back an exhibition label which places the subject of the work in Monastir in Tunisia. All in very good condition. Félix Guyot-Guillain is a French artist born in 1878. Student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Besançon then at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He arrived in Tunisia in 1905 and returned there several times, notably in 1923 and especially in the 1940s. He participated in the conservation of the Medina of Tunis. A member of the Tunisian Salon from 1911 to 1958, he was its general commissioner. He died in 1960. A landscape painter, his travels renewed his pictorial palette. The bright, vivid colors contrast with a duller palette that he used in his landscapes depicting the Paris region.
