Portrait of a Child with Grapes, oil on panel, French School circa 1820, circle of Dubois-Drahonet
Small portrait on panel, a support less common in French post-Napoleonic portraiture, indicating careful execution for private commission. The figure, isolated against a plain background, follows a scheme favoured within the circle of Dubois-Drahonet (1791–1834), with attention to costume details and a smooth, balanced modelling.
The child, with reddish curls framing the forehead and a steady gaze, reveals a subtle doll-like quality: enlarged eyes, regular features, small parted lips — all softening the real likeness towards an idealised innocence. The grape cluster, discreetly woven in a basket, adds a restrained symbolic accent without overstatement.
Condition: good, with consistent patina and minor age-related craquelure.
Gilt wooden frame, of similar period or style.
Dimensions: 34 × 32 cm with frame; 27 × 25 cm without frame.
