"Russian Orthodox Icon - Dormition Of The Holy Mother Of God Early 20th Century"
This icon depicts the Dormition of the Mother of God, one of the great themes of the Orthodox tradition. In the center, the Virgin rests on a funeral couch. Above her, Christ holds her soul in the form of a swaddled child, surrounded by angels. Around the scene are the apostles from the four corners of the world, including Saints Peter and Paul, as well as several hierarchs. Below, we see the episode of Aphthonios, a character miraculously punished for having tried to overturn the Virgin's couch. The icon is distinguished by the abundance of gilding, the hieratic figures, and the archaic style faithful to the tradition of Old Believer workshops. A festive icon probably intended for domestic or liturgical use. A typical example of provincial Russian iconography from the end of the imperial period.
Dimensions: 32x27 cm. Wood, levkas, tempera, gilding.
Wear to the gilding, small crack in the lower part.
