Iranian Kurdistan wool rug, circa 1980. Very strong, thick and comfortable rug, in very good condition.

Located in Kurdistan (western Iran, near Zandjan), the Goltogh, like the Bidjar, are held in high esteem, due to their great robustness and resistance to wear. The wool is of very good quality.
This zarsharak format goltogh is the very example of classic village rugs inspired in their designs (medallion, borders and spandrels) by ancient creations. In the center of the medallion, we find a star of Medes surrounded by an octagon representing the universe. Zoomorphic deer and some göls (flowers) on the ecru background. The main border uses the 'samovar' or 'turtle' motif.
