BIOGRAPHY:
Roderic O'Conor was born on October 17, 1860, into a wealthy family in County Roscommon (Ireland).
He studied in England, before attending the Dublin School of Fine Arts. In 1883, he studied at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts.
In 1885, he returned to Dublin where he attended the Royal Hibernia Academy of Art. He then went to Paris.
His first stay in Pont-Aven probably dates back to 1887. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants in 1889. He returned regularly to Pont-Aven from 1891 and became friends with Seguin and Forbes Roberston, then with Filiger.
In the 1890s, he was part of the group of painters close to Gauguin in Pont-Aven. He left Brittany from 1905; he then worked mainly in his Parisian studio, isolated from the artistic community. O'Conor died on March 18, 1940, in Nueil-sur-Layon in Maine-et-Loire.
He is considered today as one of the greatest Irish artists.
His works are in the greatest museums: Museum of modern art (New York), Musée d'Orsay (Paris), Tate gallery (London), National Gallery of Ireland (Dublin)...and can sell for several hundred thousand euros at auction !!
