Post-impressionist painter (1874-1946) Pierre Eugène Montezin is a French post-impressionist painter and draftsman born in Paris, very influenced by the art of Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley. His painting is characterized by a research concentrated on light effects and by a very free and rapid touch in the tradition of the Impressionists. Close to Claude Monet in the chosen themes and pictorial style, Pierre Eugène Montezin is a very talented artist who seduces amateurs.
His water lilies and his garden views are reminiscent of the productions of the Father of Impressionism. Montezin is considered a visionary autodidact with an art that generally departs from the norms dictated by the academic vision of the time. His formidable sense of observation quickly positioned him as an excellent landscape artist.
His technique seduced by its virtuosity. Recognition thus came to Montezin from the 1910s; Rosa Bonheur Prize (1920), Medal of Honor of French Artists (1932), President of the Jury of French Artists (1933) and finally member of the Institute of France at the Academy of Fine Arts (1941).
The artist has always been passionate about nature, admiring its beauty and diversity. His childhood walks with his father had a lasting impact on him, as evidenced by his work. In 1933, the Charpentier gallery organized an exhibition of the artist, followed in 1938 by another exhibition at the Durand-Ruel Gallery. Many of his works are exhibited in museums around the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Petit Palais museum in Paris. What we think of this work: Bathers, gouache and watercolor on paper signed lower left 44 x 58cm.
We present here a very beautiful gouache by the artist, which, like a work by Claude Monet, transcribes the lights and vibrant colors that nature offers. The strong impasto, as well as the quick touches, give movement and life to this gouache. The composition is particularly successful and we can perceive the painter's formidable sense of observation. Bathing subjects were often treated by the Impressionists, such as Bathing at Asnières by Georges Seurat, which is at the Musée d'Orsay, or Bathers in the Moulineaux Pond by Maximilien Luce, or Bathers on the Banks of the Yerres by Gustave Caillebotte.
In conclusion, a very beautiful work in the right format, an advantageous frame, a good subject with still strong potential knowing that prices sometimes exceed 100 k€ at auction for this artist.
