"André Auguste Silice Vietnam Portrait 1914"
Lovely framed oil on canvas depicting a young Vietnamese woman in traditional dress presented in profile, probably the artist's wife. Work signed by André Silice (1880-1951) and dated 1914. High quality work with refined details on the clothing as well as on the background with the presence of birds. Format without frame 40.5/66cm Good general condition, the canvas would deserve a simple cleaning to revive the colors. André Auguste Silice, recognized but little-known artist appointed official painter of the navy in 1928. He participated in the 1900 World's Fair with an important decorative work. A chance meeting with Émile Gallé led him to return as an art worker to the Gallé workshops in Nancy. There he discovered Far Eastern arts. In 1913 he won a competition to decorate J Boissières' book "Fumeurs d'opium (collection of short stories)". With the grant he spent a year in Tonkin. In the 1920s, he was commissioned to decorate public and private buildings in Cambodia.
