Object description :

"Marcel Vertès (1895-1961), Painting On Screen, Cabaret, Young Woman With Small Dogs, "
Very rare wavy screen depicting a young woman accompanied by her three small pet dogs. Made by Marcel Vertès, it bears the artist's signature at the top left. Marcel Vertès, born on 10-08-1895 in Hungary and died on 31-10-1961 in Paris. Pentre, engraver, illustrator and costume designer for the cinema. He studied in Paris at the Académie Julian. He became known in France from the 1920s, particularly for his lithographs and illustrations. His favorite subjects were then the circus, balls, houses of pleasure, cabarets etc... He achieved fame with the release of his album of lithographs entitled "Dancings", he illustrated "chéri" and "Vagabonde" by Colette. In the 1930s he worked for fashion magazines such as the English edition of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar etc... Watercolorist and costume designer, he also collaborated on numerous advertising campaigns for luxury perfumes as well as fabric design. In the early 1950s, he enjoyed great renown in artistic circles, justified by his exceptional talent. He participated in John Huston's film Moulin Rouge as a costume designer and set designer, and he received two Oscars for this film. Our screen was most likely made for the backstage of a cabaret show of Parisian life. Made with a mixed material plate including a layer of zinc center thus giving it this wavy shape. This plate rests on a base covered with a pink-mauve colored velvet. We report small lacks of paint, some small accidents on the edges especially in the upper part (see photos), and a small wear and discoloration of the velvet. all this being normal given the use and the age of this object.
