Pablo Tillac (1880–1969) - Illustration For Antony And Cleopatra
Pablo TILLAC (1880–1969)
Illustration for Antony and Cleopatra Gouache on paper, 41.7 × 26 cm
Illustration created by Pablo Tillac to accompany the sonnet Antony and Cleopatra by José-Maria de Heredia, from the collection Les Trophées, published in 1893.
The work presents, in a stylized architectural frame, a profile representation of Cleopatra, integrated into a composition combining portrait, narrative setting and text. The background scene represents a naval battle, identifiable by the presence of galleys facing off on a lively sea.
This imagery refers to the historical context evoked in the poem, in particular to the Battle of Actium.
The text of the sonnet is reproduced in part at the bottom of the composition, inscribed in capital letters:
"Both of them, they watched from the high terrace,
Egypt fall asleep under a stifling sky
And the river, through the black Delta that it splits,
Towards Bubaste or Saïs roll its fat wave."
The layout juxtaposes figurative and textual elements, in a frame with contrasting colors and motifs inspired by Antiquity.
The treatment of the figures, the galleys and the ornamental frames is part of an illustrative approach serving the text.
Provenance: Collection Pierre Minvielle, author of Pablo Tillac, the portraitist of the Basques, ed. Atlantica, Biarritz, 2013.
Work reproduced p. 83 and described p. 84 to 86.
