Portrait Of A Young Woman With A Hat - Gustav Wertheimer
Austro-Hungarian School, circa 1880 by Gustav Wertheimer. Oil on canvas Elegant portrait of a young woman seen three-quarters, her gaze direct, wearing a straw hat decorated with pastel flowers. The face, treated with great finesse of modeling, stands out against a background brushed in a range of muted greens and deep browns. The whole exudes a discreet grace, between naturalness and refinement. The warm palette, the pearly complexions, the controlled light and the free treatment of the brushstrokes evoke the style of Gustav Wertheimer, an Austro-Hungarian painter active in Paris and Vienna, a student of Léon Cogniet and a regular exhibitor at the Salon in the years 1870–1890.
