Frans Schwartz trained at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen between 1866 and 1872, and began exhibiting at the Charlottenborg Salon in 1874. Mainly specializing in religious painting and large decorations for churches and state buildings, he also produced portraits and nude studies. Very self-critical of his painting, rather removed from artistic trends and solitary in nature, he nevertheless created an independent art school, which was intended as a reaction against academic teaching. The end of his career was marked by significant activity as an engraver.
Frans Schwartz's sensitive personality is perfectly expressed in this very gentle, half-tone portrait, which also corresponds well to his taste for faces depicted in profile or three-quarter view.
