Matthew van Plattenberg (1608-1660), also known by his French name Mathieu de Plattemontagne, was a Flemish painter, engraver and draughtsman, naturalized French, especially renowned for his seascapes in a pre-romantic Baroque style.
His particular style is found in dramatic seascapes, storms, agitated ports, shipwreck scenes. His landscapes are animated by fragile boats, rocky coasts, figures in distress or fishing scenes.
He excels in the representation of the agitation of the sea, tormented clouds and striking light effects.
Some of his works are in major French museums including the Louvre.
A precursor of the marine picturesque in France, influencing Along with artists such as Joseph Vernet, he played an important role in the rise of the maritime genre in France, blending Flemish tradition and Italian aesthetics.
