Object description :

"19th Century Rococo Style Mantel Clock "
Magnificent Empire Period Gilt Bronze and Malachite Mantel Clock, Attributed to a Major Founder-Chaser such as Thomire or Galle, Circa 1810. This splendid mantel clock is an eloquent embodiment of the architectural grandeur and refined elegance that defined the Empire style, the apogee of classicism in France in the early 19th century. Its design, masterfully combining the purity of classical lines with opulent ornamentation, reflects the profound influence of Greco-Roman antiquity, dear to this period. The undoubted focal point of this work is the exquisite patinated and gilt bronze sculptural figure of a young woman, probably a classical muse or an allegory of the arts. She sits gracefully in a contemplative pose, leaning against an architectural element that appears to support the clock. His delicate features, the flowing drape of his tunic, and his serene expression bear witness to the exceptional skill of the founder-chaser. Beside him, classical attributes such as a lyre or an amphora reinforce his allegorical identity. The clock mechanism is harmoniously integrated into a rectangular base, richly veneered with genuine malachite. This mineral, renowned for its concentric patterns and deep shades of green, gives the whole an opulence and a striking contrast with the brilliance of the gilt bronze. The malachite base is superbly adorned with finely chiseled gilt bronze mounts, featuring emblematic motifs of the Empire: acanthus scrolls, stylized palmettes, and floral garlands, executed with remarkable precision. The balance and harmony of the composition reflect the aesthetic principles dictated by the imperial architects Percier and Fontaine.
Technical and Historical Notes: The clock houses an eight-day movement, striking the hours and half-hours on a bell, attesting to the high quality of French watchmaking of this period. This type of movement, standard for luxury timepieces, guarantees reliable and accurate timekeeping. The mechanism has recently been cleaned and serviced by a master watchmaker specializing in the conservation of antique and museum clocks, ensuring its perfect working order and longevity for future generations. It comes complete with its original balance, winding key, and bell.
Attribution and Context: The exceptional quality of the bronze casting and mercury gilding (vermeil), combined with the sophistication of the neoclassical composition, strongly suggests the involvement of one of the greatest Parisian bronzier-chasers of the Empire period. Such a high level of execution is characteristic of renowned workshops, such as those of Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843), Claude Galle (1759-1815) or André-Antoine Ravrio (1759-1814), who supplied the Imperial Court and the European aristocracy with objets d'art of unparalleled luxury. These artisans were renowned for their ability to transform bronze into true works of art.
Condition: The clock is presented in excellent original condition, with a remarkably well-preserved original patina and mercury gilding, which give the whole a richness and authenticity befitting its age. The minor wear is that of an object that has survived the centuries with dignity.
