"Ophthalmo-phantom, Robert And Collin, C. 1870"
Mask or ophthalmo-phantom for practicing eye surgery. Painted metal; 17x13.5cm. Mask of an ophthalmo-phantom made of blackened metal and signed "Robert et Collin à Paris" or dated around 1867-1870. An ophthalmo-phantom is a teaching device allowing students to practice, to train, in eye surgery. The metal mask was mounted on a height-adjustable and tilting stand. A device fixed behind the mask allowed a real eye (often pig or rabbit) to be introduced into the orbit and the student could then practice the desired operation. Surface marks and wear but rare object.
