"Late 18th Century Drawing: Young Girl Dressed In West Indian Fashion "
Women's fashion during the Revolution and the Directory changed radically: we moved from the pannier dress, already greatly simplified before 1789, to a flowing dress close to the body, highlighting the natural feminine forms. The hairstyle, short hair, after the disappearance of the powdered wig, is during the day, when we walk around at home in negligee, covered with a scarf, often madras, evoking the Antilles and its fashions brought back by Josephine. Our small pen drawing evokes all these changes, the dress tied under the chest, the scarf tied in the planter's fashion. Note that it is in its original frame, and has never been opened since the Directory. Slightly yellowed paper, but the whole is in good condition.
