Mr. René Le Gall, better known as Gougnou, was a Breton painter from Louargat.
He was born on January 11, 1940 and died in 2014.
Gougnou was a discreet painter from Kerbabu, a small hamlet located in Plougasnou in Finistère, Brittany.
However, he was known for his colorful landscapes and his passion for the sea.
The life and work of Mr. Gougnou
Although Mr. Gougnou began painting at a young age, he did not begin exhibiting his work publicly until the age of 30.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rennes and also attended the Académie Julian in Paris.
He often cited the influence of Impressionist painters on his work. Mr. Gougnou worked primarily in oils and watercolors and was a prolific artist.
He was best known for his seascapes, but he also painted still lifes, portraits, and urban scenes.
His style was often described as bright and joyful, with a skillful use of color.
Throughout his career, Mr. Gougnou participated in numerous group exhibitions in Brittany, as well as in Paris and Belgium.
He also had several solo exhibitions, including at Tempo in Morlaix, in Roscoff, and at Mr. Jean-Michel Mottet's art gallery in Paris.
In 2015, an oil painting by Gougnou was put up for auction at Thierry-Lannon, an auctioneer in Quimper. This painting, titled "Landscape with Trees," ultimately sold for €1,800.
