Signed “Bouvard” lower right.
Antoine Bouvard (1870-1956), also known under the pseudonym Marc Aldine, is a French painter born in Isère. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he initially turned to architecture and became Director of the Architectural Services of the Seine. He discovered Venice during a trip at the beginning of the 20th century and immediately fell under the spell of its captivating atmosphere. He returned there many times and it was during one of his stays that he met Félix Ziem, a French painter famous for his views of Venice, who would greatly influence him. Bouvard's works are characterized by shimmering plays of light and an ability to transcribe all the facets of the city of the Doges, from the animation of daily life on the Grand Canal to the almost melancholic romanticism of its hidden corners, thus managing to capture through his brushes all the essence of this city with its unparalleled charm.
