Son of the painter Adolphe Appian who trained him, he entered the Beaux-Arts in Lyon and then reached the Beaux-Arts in Paris thanks to a scholarship. While he showed a particular talent for landscape painting, he also executed portraits, seascapes and interior and outdoor scenes. In addition, he produced some prints. Initially imbued with the work of his father bathing his paintings in dark tones, he gradually moved towards a more liberated use of colors. Six oils on canvas are in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon. His works are present in numerous museums in the Lyon region, in Burgundy and in the Alps.
