Rare and sumptuous Kouba carpet of Caucasian origin, dated around 1870, measuring 599 x 255 cm. The work of renowned Armenian artisans, renowned as the best weavers in the world, this carpet is distinguished by its dazzling polychromy and the exceptional freshness of its colors. Made of wool velvet on a cotton foundation, it features a midnight blue field decorated with a mosaic of stylized bulbs and palmettes in the shape of bursting diamonds, accompanied by symbols representing the earth. Three borders frame the whole, including a main one also midnight blue, decorated with rows of reserves with multicolored stylized floral and foliage motifs. In absolutely perfect condition, this extremely rare piece is described as "quince flowers" and is among the most exceptional examples listed in the specialized literature (Ulrich Schurman, Doris Eider, Roger Bechirian, Albert Achdjian, etc.). A masterpiece of ancient Caucasian weaving.
