Oil on canvas
17th century
Canvas cm. 75 x 92
Frame cm. 94 x 110

The canvas depicts a fascinating image of Saint Sebastian, the Holy Martyr who has inspired the most famous masters since the birth of Christian art. The naked and vigorous body of the Warrior, tied, pierced and exposed defenseless to the spectator has stimulated the pictorial and creative abilities of the great artists as well as the images of Christ on the cross. This important work of the 17th century is a splendid example of the Bolognese painting that sees the genius of Guido Reni spread in a circle of his excellent followers and collaborators, many of whom distinguished themselves by obtaining great personal recognition. The Author places the Saint's naked torso in an oblique position at the center of the canvas with his hands tied behind his back, accentuating an excellent anatomical rendering and a masterly realism of the complexion. The face is turned towards the opposite side to emphasize the elegant twisting movement of the body, covered in the lower abdomen by a white cloth. The excellent condition of the painting allows an optimal view of the sculptural effect that the Master gives to the figure.
