"Martin Varnish Type Broken Fan In Bone And Painted Mother-of-pearl, 19th Century"
Delicate fan decorated with a scene depicting elegant young people gathered in a park and dressed in 18th-century fashion, in the spirit of the gallant scenes of the Rococo period. The reverse is decorated with a riverside landscape animated by a figure and a boat. The throat and plumes are trimmed with chinoiserie. The branches are connected at the top by a thin strip of paper decorated with plant motifs enhanced with gilding.
The name “Martin varnish” refers to a type of varnish developed in the 18th century by the Martin brothers with the aim of imitating Japanese lacquer. Slightly faded decoration in the upper border.
A piece missing from one of the branches, on the reverse.
