The elegant canvas we propose here can easily be traced back to the catalogue of the Milanese painter Francesca Volò Smiller, known as Vincenzina (Milan, 1657 - 1700), a refined specialist in this genre of painting and an important member of the largest and most prolific family of Milanese painters of the 17th century;

The progenitor of this highly successful 'family enterprise' was her father, the French Italianised Vincenzo Volò, known as Vincenzino dei Fiori (1601-1671), who, in addition to Francesca, also employed her brother Giuseppe Volò (also nicknamed 'Vicenzino') and sister Margherita Volò Caffi in his workshop.

In her works, the painter shows clear similarities with the painting of her brothers, with Margherita in particular, but also specific and autonomous characteristics.

Francesca's painting is characterised by a high quality of execution, for the rendering of flowers through an intense and heartfelt naturalism, with a prevalence of acidulous and cold colours brightened by touches of deep red and illuminated by the skilful use of white. Like Margherita, Francesca arranges flowers with great compositional freedom in an embossed vase whose shimmering colours (pink, white and red are favoured) emerge from the dark background.

The material, animated by a vivid light, acquires a particular softness, delicate and virtuosic in the definition of the reflections of the vase and in the transparencies of the petals.
