Multicolored ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting a crow in flight holding a katana. Around the bird are blooming flowers and the artist's signature, seal, and poem in the upper right corner. Surimono, a special form of ukiyo-e woodblock print published for special occasions, often in small print runs and square format. It may have been published to celebrate special events, such as New Year's Day, a poetry competition, or another special request.

Surimono, ukiyo-e, Japan, 19th century. Dimensions with frame: 37.5 x 35 cm. Work: 21.6 x 18.5 cm.

Condition as seen in photographs, relatively good.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) - Japan's most famous woodblock print artist. His best-known work is a series of ukiyo-e woodblock prints entitled 36 Views of Mount Fuji, produced between 1826 and 1833. His art greatly influenced both indigenous and Western artists, especially the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.
