"Buddha, Guardian Of A Buddhist Temple, Thailand 19th Century, Patinated And Gilded Bronze Sculpture"
Patinated and gilded bronze sculpture representing a Buddhist temple guardian -- called Dvârapâla. Thailand 19th century. In Buddhist mythology, the Dvârapâla are demigods who guard the gates of sanctuaries. They chase away evil spirits and ward off negative energies. The Dvârapâla can take different forms -- human or demonic. When the Dvârapâla takes the form of a goddess -- as here -- it is called Dvarapalika. Very good general condition of preservation.
