"Alexandre-françois Desportes (1661-1743), After - Portrait Of The Artist As A Hunter"
Oil on wood panel. Placid in the shade of a tree, surrounded by the affection of his dogs, and proudly displaying the fruit of a long day of hunting, the artist portrays himself without the adoration one might expect from an 18th-century French portraitist. Desportes, trained by the disciples of Snyders, imbues his painting with the hedonistic and bourgeois spirit of Dutch art, as can be seen in this painting. A hunting companion of Louis XIV and Louis XV, the French painter depicted hunting trophies and the dogs of the court of Versailles, earning him the distinction of court painter. Dimensions of the image without frame: 120 x 160 cm
