A striking pair of stucco ornamental elements, depicting powerful lion heads in relief, dating back to the second half of the 19th century.
Each lion head, modelled with great expressiveness and attention to anatomical detail, emerges from a rectangular panel, suggesting an original use as a decorative architectural element – perhaps part of a boiserie, a monumental jamb or a scenographic furnishing.
Lions, a symbol of strength and protection, have often been depicted in art and architecture throughout history.
The stucco, now worn in some places, gives a pleasant patina of time that accentuates its authentic character and expressive force.
The sculptures show a skilled hand, capable of rendering the majesty of the lion through an energetic modelling of the mane and a penetrating gaze. Ideal as decorative elements (bookends etc.) or for scenographic installations.
