Georg Jensen – Hammered Silver Jug, Model 385a, Design Johan Rohde
GEORG JENSEN – Hammered silver jug, model 385A, design Johan Rohde Elegant solid silver jug with a baluster shape, with a hand-hammered body, adorned with a superb fluted ebony handle and a stylized motif of leaves and grape clusters carved at the junction of the neck. This iconic model, referenced 385A, was designed by the great Danish designer Johan Rohde for the house of Georg Jensen, a major figure in the revival of Scandinavian silversmithing at the beginning of the 20th century. This is the very first edition of this model, produced between 1910 and 1925, as evidenced by the GI925S hallmark visible under the base, used by the house of Georg Jensen during this period. This piece therefore belongs to the historical phase of the house, prior to later reissues of the same model. The set is a perfect example of the transition between Nordic Art Nouveau aesthetics and the beginnings of Art Deco, with its clean forms and powerful lines. The quality of the hammering, the balance of the volumes, and the purity of the design are typical of Rohde's best creations for Jensen. The perfectly preserved fluted ebony handle creates a subtle contrast with the brilliance of the silver. The bottom is hallmarked: GEORG JENSEN crowned (historical hallmark) STERLING – DENMARK – 385A GI925S (confirming production between 1910 and 1925) Characteristics: Period: between 1910 and 1925 Origin: Denmark Silversmith: Georg Jensen Designer: Johan Rohde Model: 385A Hallmark: GI925S (confirming the period of manufacture) Material: Solid 925/1000 silver (sterling) and ebony handle Technique: Hand hammered Style: Early Art Deco, with Art Nouveau reminiscences Dimensions: Height 17.5 cm Weight: 520 grams Condition: Very good condition, no visible shock or restoration
