Stanislas Lepine - Oil On Canvas - Street In Montmartre - 1880

Lovely work by the great French impressionist painter Stanislas LÉPINE representing the Saint-Vincent street in Montmartre, more precisely its lower part, on the side of the cemetery with the Girardon street below.

His views of Paris, particularly Montmartre, represent the subjects most sought after by collectors, who can fetch several tens of thousands of euros.

We found in the collections of the Carnavalet Museum in Paris, a drawing dated 1890 presenting a similar view, with the same street lamp, produced by Jules-Adolphe CHAUVET. However, we can note the presence of paving stones demarcating the sidewalks in 1890, which are absent in LEPINE's painting, which allows us to certainly date it around 1870-1880.

33 x 25 cms (with frame, slight restorations, approximately 51 x 43 cms)

Red stamp "S.LÉPINE" at the bottom right, partially legible
Several works by Stanislas LÉPINE bearing the same stamp can be found in the museums of Tours, Le Havre and Rouen

On the reverse, on the stretcher, top left, an inscription "Rue Saint-Vincent à Montmartre", followed by a signature "S.LÉPINE"

Also on the back, a handwritten text written in french by Madame LÉPINE, glued at the corners on the canvas : "This small painting that Mr. XXX (illegible name crossed out in black) presented to me representing the Saint-Vincent street on Montmartre hill is indeed by my husband Stanislas LÉPINE", signed "Vve S.LÉPINE" (Vve = Widow)

Excellent condition, artwork completely cleaned in July 2024 (devarnishing) which has regained its pretty original colors
