"The Golden Apple And The Three Goddesses, Follower Of Titian, 17th Century Venetian School"
Our painting precisely describes the episode that gave rise to the “Judgment of Paris”: At the wedding of Peleus and Thetis on Olympus, all the gods are invited except Eris, goddess of Discord. To take revenge, Eris throws a golden apple with the words “For the fairest” on it: the Apple of Discord. Three goddesses then claim the fruit, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. Then Paris, on Mount Ida, designates Aphrodite as the winner (see Wikipedia).
Our painting, in the last style of Titian, late 16th-early 17th century, is relined and has some restorations. (Ref. Cabinet Turquin - Paris)
Its carved wooden frame seems to be of 17th century origin
