Pietà, devotional plaque. Bronze. Spanish school, 17th century, after the model by Guglielmo DELLA PORTA.
Bronze devotional plaque, oval in shape, with a ring at the top and a molded frame with an inner line of stripes surrounding a figurative religious scene. This one depicts Mary holding the body of Christ after his death (Pietà), after a model attributed to Guglielmo della Porta (1515-1577). Compare with the gilt bronze relief in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, attributed to Jacob Cornelis Cobaert, who was himself inspired by a model linked to Guglielmo della Porta and which is believed to have been executed in Rome around 1569. This type of devotional plaque was very common in the Spanish school.
